The negative effects of social media are many.

effects such as desensitization can impact lives by making usually unacceptable things seem normal and ok to do when in reality they are not

There are also other issues such as trolling which where one gets enjoyment and entertainment by harassing or annoying others which can make social media result in ruining ones day, social media can also ruin ones career by a old post from years ago from a younger self which can be dug up by others online to bring it to light and ruin the career of the person who posted it despite it being a thing of the past but in the modern day of everything being covered on the internet, its impossible to escape anything that is done online, everyone leaves a digital footprint that cannot be truly erased from the internet as there are always some archive backing it up.

social media can also lessen the culture and traditions of lesser developed countries as larger countries can promote their culture more effectively than the less developed which may erode away at the lesser country's culture and convert it to the larger countries culture through imperialism

The plethora of bad effects that social media induces continues to be endless as new ways are found with each new unique person on social media. 

a single issue with a company can be broadcasted wide for all to hear to immediately rip and tear at the companys long built reputation and quality down to nothing within seconds with social media

it is a powerful tool when used in the right hands, it only takes a few clicks to destroy ones reputation, ones career, ones life.

packards passive audience theory suggests that the audience passively accepts anything media gives them in its entirety, this can result in bad effects when the media being shown relates to promoting hate or facism 

the active audience theory also states that the audience doesnt just passively accept messages given to the media but involve themselves in it by posting about the messages in their own words.

Gerbner and gross's cultivation theory suggests that overtime, audiences are desensitized to the possibly violent content shown to them via social media and begin to think it is normal for such content to be done and performed in reality when it is not.
